GOVERNMENT HOUSE.

HONGKONG. 13th July, 1920,

I have the honour to inform Your Lordship that

I have had under consideration a proposal that a complete geological survey should be made of the territory of this

Colony.

I cannot quite agree with the view taken in

former years and reported in Sir F. H. May's despatch No.241 of the 24th August, 1918, that in view of the work done by

private prospectors, a scientific investigation by an expert geologist would be of little value. I consider it more likely

that such an expert would divert attention to things which might prove of immense value to the Colony and the Empire, which a man solely looking for a commercially valuable deposit of a specific nature would not trouble to investigate.

The area of this Colony is small so that I do not consider that a survey would occupy more than about a year, and I should be glad, therefore, if Your Lordship could inform me of the probable cost of a visit to the Colony of an expert geologist for a period of one year and for the prepara- tion of a complete survey of the Colony.
